FORT POND COTTAGE RENOVATION

Originally a Navy barrack relocated from the old town in the 1950s, this modest structure on Fort Pond was reimagined as a tranquil retreat. Though rich in history, the building had significant structural issues and needed to be taken down to the cinderblocks before being repaired and rebuilt. The designer honored the original footprint, keeping the size consistent with the past, but transformed the feel of the space entirely.

The biggest shift came from rethinking the layout and removing the low, dropped ceiling, which had made the cottage feel confined. Opening up the ceilings and reconfiguring the interior to direct every sightline toward the water makes the space feel expansive and bright despite its compact square footage.

Natural light floods the home, highlighting clean, modern lines and a calming palette. Every design choice enhanced the connection to the outdoors and created a sense of serenity. The result is a cottage that lives much larger than it is, offering the client a peaceful escape without losing the home’s historical charm.

This project perfectly shows how respectful renovation and strategic design can completely transform a space—turning a dated, utilitarian structure into a welcoming, timeless retreat.
